PTI supporter sentenced to 3 years in prison for tweeting against army, senior military leadership

  A district and sessions court in Faisalabad has sentenced a PTI supporter to three years in prison for “defaming” the Pakistan Army by running a “highly obnoxious and intimidating campaign” against the senior military leadership on Twitter. Sikandar Zaman, 30, was apprehended last year by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after a complaint against him was lodged under sections 20 (Malicious code) and 24(c) (Legal recognition of offenses committed in relation to information system) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016. It also invoked sections 500 (Punishment for defamation) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code. His account had 184 followers, according to the Pak Lawyers Forum. Zaman’s mobile phone and Twitter account were also seized by the police.   Another shocking incident of murder took place in India in which a boy killed his girlfriend and kept her body in a freezer. According to Indian media, the 22-year-old victim belongs to Jajhar and the criminal is a resident of Matrao village in Najafgarh. According to the police, after his arrest, Sahil confessed that he strangled Nikki with a mobile phone data cable on February 10, after which he took Nikki's body to his dhaba and hid it in a freezer. 24/7 driving licence service launched in six cities

  Punjab DIG Traffic Mirza Faran Baig on Monday said that the 24/7 driving licence service for the convenience of citizens in six major cities of the province has been launched.  By this service, the citizens can now take the test to obtain the driving licence at any time within 24 hours.  DIG Traffic said that driving test centres will remain open 24/7 in the six major cities of the province - Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Sialkot. He said that apart from these six cities, the number of days fixed for driving licence test has been increased from two to six for the convenience of citizens of other districts of Punjab so that more citizens can benefit from the facility of driving test. Power subsidy over for farmers, exporters to please IMF

  Government will jack up power prices by Rs7.91 per unit in four quarterly adjustments. ISLAMABAD: Redoubling efforts to meet the   International Monetary Fund   (IMF) conditions, the federal cabinet Sunday approved a plan to increase the power tariff and end subsidies. The cabinet approved a revised  circular debt management plan  through circulation in this regard, local media reported. According to the plan, which will be presented to the IMF, the government will jack up power prices by Rs7.91 per unit in four quarterly adjustments – Feb-March 2023, March-May 2023, June-Aug and September-November. Under the plan, the government will charge Rs3.21 per unit from now onwards, Rs0.69 from March-May and increase it again by Rs1.64 per unit from June onwards to August of 2023. Court imposes complete ban on tree cutting in Lahore

  The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday imposed a complete ban on cutting of trees in the city in an attempt to curb the rising smog. The court also observed that a law should be en­acted for declaring cutting of trees a criminal of­fence. Justice Shahid Karim passed the orders while hearing various petitions filed by Haroon Fa­rooq and others for steps to curb the rising smog. During the proceedings, the court observed that the situation of smog was already very bad in the city and the cutting of trees would further worsen it. The Environment Protection Department should not issue NOC to any project, if it involved cutting of trees, it added. NY police officer of Pakistani-origin laid to rest with full honours

  NEW YORK: The slain Pakistani-American officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD) Adeel Fayaz was laid to rest on Thursday, after an elaborate memorial ceremony and funeral attended by hundreds, including top city officials, friends, family and fellow officers. The 26-year-old Fayaz, a father of two young children, was off-duty when he was shot and killed last week during an attempted robbery. His funeral took place at Makki Masjid in Brooklyn, and drew a large number of mourners.
